Introducing attendees
  • Nick Jackson @largerama (Head of ICT at Fulford School, York)
  • Expectations from SLT are to hit FFT-D data. If students don't meet targets, no real issues as focus is on KS4.
  • Pete Astbury @astburyp (Second in dept at Fulford School, York soon to be ICT Subject Leader in Alexandria, Egypt)
  • 1hr/wk in 2yr KS3 - trialling APP. Homework is hit & miss - 20mins/wk in y7, sometimes do it, sometimes don't. Topics covered: Scratch, film-making (Adobe Premiere - now Serif Movie Plus after issues with Premier not working on our network), databases (based on superhero topic - involving graphics)
  • New school (Egypt)
  • Following National Curriculum - KS4 IGCSE. Issues with consistency of staff. 80% local students, 20% international students. Teaching is in English. Fee-paying school, would be surprised if students didn't have internet access at home for homeworks.
  • James Greenwood @jpgreenwood (Acting Head of ICT at Royds Hall High School, Huddersfield)
  • 2yr KS3, 2hrs/week - expectations are for students to meet FFTD forecasts which are very high (level 7/8 by the end of y8). Students aren't meeting these targets - SoW doesn't allow them to, currently. Homework: y7 have extended homework projects - 1/half-term - that had to be written a month ago, while the y7 SoW hasn't yet been written (!) These don't fit with what's done in class.
  • Donna Hay @dwsm (Head of ICT at Abbey Wood School, Filton, Bristol
  • Current school
  • 2hrs/fortnight y7/8/9 - one hour/wk in these years is cross-curricular, 2 teachers - that lesson is spent applying ICT skills in another subject. Doesn't seem to be working thus far - 2nd (other subject) teacher will no longer be in the lessons from next year & cross-curricular link is being scrapped.
  • Thrown out strategy lessons, using APP as the foundation creating a more lively, engaging curriculum. Prep for KS4 (diplomas) - digital literacy, collab working. Functional Skills fantasy football scheme of work.
  • Homework set every week, based on work done in the lessons.
  • Next school
  • Non-specialists teaching ICT @ KS3, 1hr/wk - possibly shared with RE/PSHCE.
  • roger.crawford@hud.ac.uk sitting in. Interested in ICT teacher training and Functional Skills in ICT and IGCSE.
  • Sarah Evans @jennah1000 (KS3 ICT Co-ordinator, Alumwell BEC Walsall)
  • Collapsed curriculum in y7: tasks often use computers as replacement to pen & paper - "create a PowerPoint on..."
  • OCR Nationals in y8 (on one hour/week) - did very well with unit 21 (Fireworks & Dreamweaver), unit 1 a disaster - boring, students struggling. Students barely learning anything, despite completing KS4 qualification.
  • Y9 next year will be doing OCR Nationals new spec.
  • 7hrs/fortnight y10/11 option - lots of learning time, with assignment time in addition to.
  • Homework: extended homework - 1 project/term (3/yr) - subject-specific. Haven't managed it - can't do computer-based homeworks.
  • BSF planning with architect had nowhere to teach ICT - expectation is for it to be taught across the curriculum (up to A level?!)
  • No money for improvements to the school for past 2yrs due to BSF, but likely to be cancelled.
  • Alex Robinson - ICT Strategic Adviser
  • Mark MacInnes @MarkAMacInnes (At present PGCE student and from Sept NQT ICT Teacher at Trinity School Nottingham)
  • Roughly follow old National Strategies units with some changes.
  • 1 hour a week at Year 7-9. Setted according to either Maths or English.
  • Introducing new units, especially looking at programming/problem solving.
  • Drew Buddie - Head of ICT Royal Masonic School @digitalmaverick
  • 70mins per wk ICT to Year 7 & 8 + (spits) CLAIT
  • 5 wk course (5 x 70mins) Year 9
  • GCSE Year 10-11 - currently OCR Syll B
  • A Level ICT - Year 12-13 - WJEC
Kristian Still Director of E Learning - (being replaced by HOD ICT)
KS3 7/8. 2hrsper wk. PSRE/L2L themes used to focus ICT skills. a) Crime data / social responsibility - intro to spreadsheets.
Yr 9-11 OCR 2 hrs a week. Unit 4 / 1 / 7
Option now available - Units 23/22 / 5 / 3
All work stored in dept Dept created by colleague. Happy to share.
Levelling systematically calculated.
Great for parents evening, print indivual reports / share class reports.

All PC-based, stable internet access.

Assessment

Looking at Primary Review level descriptors http://bit.ly/baxQAW - level 3/4/5 beefed up, and data logging back in.

  • Whatever ictcurric we end up with needs to be flexible for use with different assessment models (APP, Primary Review descriptors, etc).
  • Working on basing around APP which we feel is felxible enough to account for differences with other models or to allow easy adaptation when needed

Baseline data
  • Very inconsistent transition data received from primary schools.
  • 1st term of ICT as skills building to get all students up to speed as a starting point
  • Use of Yaccapaca for obtaining baseline data for all y7 students.  Has picked up on inconsistencies with data from feeder schools. Not always accurate as some students didn't take test seriously or had a bad day.  Tests 'what you know' not 'what you can do'.  Issues with second-language-english students doing less well because of language barrier when actually they are much more able.
  • Use a mini project as a baseline assessment which tests skills? A practical, timed assessment entirely skills based.
  • What value is data - have limited experience in our group of using the data we get from these tests well, a feeling that it done for the sake of having data right now.
  • In ICT skills are more important than recalling facts.  Outcomes vs knowledge.
  • Use of bright sparks (see show and tell below) for data tracking, analysis and reporting - ongoing assessment through use of eportfolio
  • Mixed sets at Hamble College.

PLTS
  • some schools have a bigger focus than others on implementing this within lessons
  • use of special "laminated boards" in all lessons at fulford!

Show and Tell
Bright Sparks - Sarah
  • Online portfolios for presenting and assessing work - £1,800 for first year and £500 a year after - looks good, good experience of using this in Sarah's school
  • Useful for recording enterprise skills
  • links in to PLTS, SEAL, allows assessment on portfolio to be mapped to different assessment models and cross references and links curriculum
  • diary entries with attached media and files.
  • students say which of the assessment criteria what they think the evidence they have uploaded is evidencing

Techno Kids - Sarah
  • spreadsheet project

3 Mini projects
  • Lego control Project
  • robots - little cars - control project
  • some had already done in KS2
  • Stop-motion animaiton
  • Disney flix cameras and software
  • Claymation
  • Moviemaking
  • Digital video cameras
  • Windows Movie Maker

Awareness project (James)
  • 5 min intro video on electronic waste disposal in ghana
  • in groups student create an awareness campaign
  • many places buy consumer electronic waste and then ship to africa because of reduced costs to "recycle" there
  • year 8 project having completed skills work
  • students chose how they will get the message across - videos, desktop screensavers, etc
  • difficult to mark because of the huge range of work submitted
  • combined research and presentation project as students need to do further research beyond what they get from the video
  • some good websites around, ie greenpeace

  • Social Media / Digital Literacy (Donna)
  • United Airlines example - online/viral campaigning's effect on large corporations
  • e-stalking
  • 16 year old student's video on youtube saying that earthquake deaths were a good thing - massive backlash resulting in her life being ruined - casestudy: is viral campaigning always a good thing?
  • Use of google forms/spreadsheets as part of assessment

Film-making project (Nick/Pete)
  • token for guest access: ictcurric
  • Based on e-safety, learning about cyberbullying, etc.
  • Plan, film & edit a video about e-safety, using the internet safely etc - from planning through to promoting the video. Scripting, storyboarding.
  • http://celtx.com/ used for storyboarding - free for basic version, good for unit 23 as well as KS3.
  • Filming in groups on one area of e-safety, footage put into shared bank that is then used by groups to edit the video. Focuses on AF1 & AF3.
  • Collaborative work using wikis & Etherpad.
  • Power of user-generated content - live Twitter feeds on trending topics.
  • website design project - creating a single page "personal profile"

Curriculum Development
  • What would you want to see on a new KS3 ICT Curric?
  • Broad projects covering more than one area.
  • Scheme of work which becomes more open ended over time
  • By the end of y7 students to be able to choose their own tools to complete given tasks.  ie not "and today we're going to do powerpoint"
  • Applied projects

  • progression from scratch to alice/game maker/construct
  • Online collaboration x 2
  • Publishing
  • Cryptography inc enigma machine
  • Podcasting / sound editing (with voki)?
